Top Interior Design Trends for 2020

Senior Living Edition

No. 1 | Color Me Impressed

Color is in, neutrals are out. This year has been all about utilizing color in senior living design. Previously, senior living design stayed within the confines of a more neutral palette. But, now the trend is to incorporate a fun saturation of color in any senior living space. Studio 1∙2∙1 designs have been no exception this year and we are loving all of the ways that color is informing the spaces that we create!

No. 2 | Marble

Marble and Metals are numbers 2 and 3 on our list of 2020 Design Trends, and this marble-inspired navy luxury vinyl flooring with metallic champagne-colored inlay gives a grounded and glamorous vibe.

No. 3 | Metals

Coming in at number 3 on our list of 2020 design trends, metallic elements need a special mention. From accessories, to lighting, patterns, flooring, and finishes - there are so many ways to incorporate metals into design. Metallic accents can bring both a sense of glamor and luxury while also punctuating an earthy sensibility.

No. 4 | Elevated Amenities

Wellness Amenities

Senior Living Design is all about creating spaces that include luxury amenities for residents. We are designing expansive spa and wellness amenities like float therapy, massage suites, pools, fitness centers, yoga studios, and guided meditation rooms. Lifestyle amenities can range from game rooms, billiards rooms, libraries, and movie theaters to studios for creative arts like music, wood working, painting, and pottery.

No. 5 | Dining Options

Now the trend in senior living is to design communities that offer multiple dining options, rather than just one. For a recent independent living project we completed in Deerfield, Illinois, our team designed three distinctly different dining venues, including a casual dining room, formal dining, and a grab and go bar.

No.6 | Shared Spaces

If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that a little alone time can be healthy, but too much of it… not so much. Open floor plans that are engineered to provide both shared spaces for socializing and also accommodate solo areas are trending this year. We love this open floor plan of our newly completed project, Tamarisk NorthShore (pictured). Our design team was able to create cohesion and allow it to flow effortlessly while maintaining unique individuality within each space.

No. 7 | Memory Support Personalization

Memory Care Signage

In Memory Support spaces, digital signage is being used outside of resident rooms to give a personalized touch and help residents navigate the community with ease. Additionally, digital photo frames can be built into the wall inside of resident suites, allowing families to keep their loved ones in the loop by sending photos directly to the digital frames. With the amount of separation that families have experienced in 2020, digital solutions like this can make all the difference in helping residents feel connected and cared for.

No. 8 | Make a Statement

Make a statement and add a touch of nature to any space with indoor plants. When our design team installed The Preserve earlier this year, large plants with colorful planters were a must.

No. 9 | Tech-informed Design

Tech-informed Design

Smart home tech is being used in many senior living communities. Our team endeavors to find a balance of design and tech to seamlessly integrate the two. We are seeing tech utilized in design through audio systems, lighting, outlets, cameras, entryways, security, temperature control, appliances, and digital signage.

No. 10 | Clean Chic

We couldn’t have a list of 2020 design trends without mentioning the essential design trend for 2020: automated antibacterial spray! Though this is not a new trend in senior living environments, it deserves a nod on this list.
